Expand the Light
Mom and I were talking about (well, I was talking about) allergies. She remarked how she felt so bad for the rest of the family who suffer with Texas Springtime Biological Attacks. I teased her about how, when I was evaluated for allergies it turned out I was very allergic to crabgrass…when we were living in Omaha, that was kid chores…digging crabgrass out of the lawn. I was always miserable, obviously. She said she didn’t believe in allergies back then, but she has seen them develop and lay low the toughest of people…also my Dad. :) When I teased her about forcing me to do something that made me so sick, she said something along the lines of “I could only see by the light I had”…I have been chewing on that this morning. Mom has always been so good about trying hard to open her understanding to things and to acquire more information and guidance when she doesn’t understand something. So that made me think.
If you are seeing by the light you have and you act in ignorance (presumably because you can’t see beyond that light), be sure to gather more knowledge and modify your behavior…that knowledge can be a longer wick and more fuel for your light so that you can see beyond the initial circle. I don’t think it is okay to STAY in that first circle of light, if that ignorance has been revealed. I think it is so important to continue to expand the light by which you see so that you can embrace other people, differences, warts, and all.
There is too much dividing us these days to stay in the dark. I get that it is a big ask for people to just swan dive into the dark…the circles of light are like rocks in a stream…stepping onto something solid is more comfortable for us, I know…just don’t get stuck on one rock because you didn’t raise your light a little higher. Because you didn’t learn a little more.
