Sign of the Times

We are in a state of giddiness here at school today. The Powers have declared the next two days as snow days, the kids are so relieved that they are almost puddles. I have a residual clench when it comes to snow days, at least professionally…it means that we might not get our Bad Weather Make Up days in April…we will miss them, to be sure…but most of my brain is filled with delighted anticipation…turning off ALL alarm clocks…making hot chocolate and cinnamon toast in the early afternoon when I finally get out of bed…reading a novel for pleasure.

So. My students are too much of a viscous liquid at the moment to cover new material, so I suggested a day of board games. The first class today saw a group of them playing Life. There was a little good-natured bickering at the outset. One of the lad was moving his car on the track without one of those little people pegs and one of the other kids objected:

“Hey! You can’t drive your car without a person in it!”

To which he responded:

“Sure I can. It’s a Tesla.”

My next class chose to play a game called Mafia. I am still trying to figure out the rules (they seem to be a moving target). This game is set in the charming village of Roblesville. The narrations are chilling but hilarious. Roblesville is fraught with homicidal maniacs it would seem. The North Hills Mafia is terrifying. The villains are full of creative ways to “whack” people, and they are fairly knowledgeable about how to dispose of the remains without detection. I am cast as the deity of this game (did I mention the rules are a moving target), and in this role I feel compelled to counsel them against a life of crime.

I’ll check back in about my last class today.
